Abstract: 
The interaction of transient o-semiquinones (from dihydroxybenzoic acid) with paramagnetic metal ions (Mn2+, Cu2+, Gd3+) in aqueous solutions has been studied. The radicals were either free in solution or complexed with the diamagnetic metal ion Zn2+. Paramagnetic ions induce relaxation in the free radical; cw saturation and linewidth measurements show that T1 and T2 are shortened to the same extent. In the presence of excess diamagnetic ions, no loss of integrated signal intensity was observed. In their absence, significant loss of integrated signal intensity of both the free radical and the paramagnetic metal ion was found, and attributed to complex formation between the radical and the metal ion.
